"The president promised - both during the campaign and after - that he would support efforts to stem the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs, so I am looking forward to discussing ideas he said he supports", Cummings said on Tuesday.

Elijah Cummings appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Thursday to discuss his recent meeting with President Trump and the Democrat from Maryland's takeaway will probably surprise most people.

The two had been at odds after Trump accused Cummings of cancelling a scheduled meeting because it would be "bad politics" to be seen with the president.

After some political tussling last month, congressional pharma watchdog Rep. Elijah Cummings finally met with President Donald Trump to talk drug prices.

The meeting between Cummings and Mr. Trump was in the works for several weeks.

Cummings replied in a statement, " I have no idea why President Trump would make up a story about me like he did today".

Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, dismissed Trump's allegations that he was wire-tapped by former President Barack Obama - telling Blitzer that the dust-up may cause him to be more careful about his Twitter use.

Americans spent $374 billion on prescription drugs previous year, but only 17 percent of people shop around for a lower price.

"T$3 he thing we do know is a problem is voter suppression and that you can't have any reasonable investigation of voting in the USA unless you deal with that issue", Cummings said.

After his meeting at the White House on Wednesday, Cummings said he pressed that case with the president as well, stressing the need for Vice President Pence's inquiry into voter fraud to also include a look at voter suppression.

And, Welch said, "the price is starting to kill us, we just can't afford it". "He knew the facts ... he was even supportive of a proposal that we did not bring to him and that was one that Bernie Sanders and I had been working on".

"We are seeing astronomical increases in some drug prices, sometimes more than 1,000 percent", Miller said.
