After Trashing Tribal Lands, Pipeline Protesters Descend On DC

Crude oil could begin moving in the Dakota Access Pipeline as early as next week, after a federal judge on Tuesday refused to block completion and operation of the almost done pipeline. The Missouri River reservoir is the last piece of construction on the pipeline to move North Dakota oil to IL, and also the source of both tribes' water. The motion that sought to block the easement argued "the mere existence of a crude oil pipeline under the waters of Lake Oahe [would] desecrate those waters", leaving them unsuitable for the tribe's religious ceremonies.

Hundreds of protesters descended on D.C. Friday, starting their march outside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters and ending it outside the White House.

That pipeline is being installed now, after Trump signed an executive order last month smoothing the path for construction.

The reversal came after President Barack Obama said in November the Corps was looking for a way to reroute the pipeline.

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe has fought the project for years, and over the past several months they have created an encampment near the construction zone where clashes between protesters, security and police have at times become violent.

A federal judge declined Tuesday to temporarily stop construction of the final section of the disputed Dakota Access oil pipeline, clearing the way for oil to flow as soon as next week.

"This whole experience has really been a roller coaster ride of emotions", said Kandi Mossett, a resident from North Dakota. "When Exxon runs our foreign policy, that should tell us a lot about the intent of this administration".

More than 1,600 miles from the Dakota Access Pipeline, tall teepees now dot parts of the National Mall, in anticipation of a Friday march to the White House.

In February, authorities cleared Oceti Sakowin camp, the main Standing Rock protest site near the Dakota pipeline in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. It then made a decision to put forth a request in the court against Preliminary Injection Motion and asked the court to halt the construction process. The Standing Rock Sioux also filed a challenge to review the government's decision-making process, especially for giving the go-ahead to the project without completing a full environmental impact review. Trump said that the project would put thousands of Americans back to work.

When the Cheyenne River started having concerns about the flow of oil under the Lake Oahe, they thought that it would harm and cause damage to religious practices of all its members.
