Bill now passes back to the House of Lords.

European Council President Donald Tusk has said he will issue draft "negotiating guidelines" within 48 hours of Article 50 being triggered.

Parliament voted to approve the passage of the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill on Monday night after the Lords backed down on two amendments it wanted MPs to add to the historic bill.

Ms May could theoretically invoke Article 50, which formally starts the Brexit process, as early as Tuesday (Wednesday NZT).

Despite talk of a potential Tory rebellion in the Commons, both amendments were rejected with relative ease. On Sunday, the House of Commons' Foreign Affairs Select Committee accused the government of "dereliction of duty" for failing to prepare for such an outcome. Six Labour rebels joined with the Conservatives to vote down both amendments.

The amendment seeking to protect the status of European Union nationals within three months of the start of the Brexit talks was rejected by 335 votes to 287.

University of Oxford bosses have said Britain should guarantee the rights of European Union citizens after Brexit or Britain's oldest university could suffer enormous damage as academics leave.

Leader of the opposition, Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, has stated his disapproval of scheduling another Scottish referendum so soon after the last, but has also said he would respect the Scots' democratic rights.

She has revealed little of her strategy for Brexit negotiations but has a long wish list - wanting to win a free trade deal, maintain security cooperation, regain control over immigration and restore sovereignty over British laws.

Sturgeon said that she had sought to work with London, but that her concerns about May's plan to leave Europe's single market, in order to cut immigration, had fallen on deaf ears.

Settling financial terms of an "exit bill" from the bloc, which will be left with 27 members once Britain leaves, will be the U.K.'s second major challenge, said Fitch.

The PM, who is considering how to respond to the demand for a referendum, said she had been in discussions with all the devolved administrations and criticised "constitutional game-playing with the future of the United Kingdom".

This will give the prime minister the legal authority to begin Brexit but Downing Street insisted today she would wait until the end of March, the deadline she has given herself.

The government's plans have also been disrupted by Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon's decision to call for a second referendum on Scottish independence while negotiations are underway.

The third hurdle is Scotland as voters there overwhelmingly rejected breaking away from the EU.

May said that another independence referendum would bring "economic uncertainty at the worst possible" time.
