The Republican and Democratic leaders of the House intelligence committee say they have seen no evidence supporting Donald Trump's claim that the Obama administration wiretapped him past year.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on Wednesday that he had "seen no evidence of illegality of any electronic surveillance" and that "there was no substance to the accusation that President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower".

That was the explanation White House press secretary Sean Spicer gave as the White House stepped back on the unsubstantiated claim that former United States president Barack Obama bugged Trump Tower during the election run-up.

"We're both willing to use compulsory process if that's necessary", said Schiff, adding that the committee will ask FBI Director James Comey directly for any evidence during a hearing next week.

Neither Mr Trump nor anyone at the White House has presented any evidence for the claim, instead asking Congress to investigate it as part of its inquiry into Russia's interference in the presidential election.

Senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway says the government has many options available to conduct surveillance against citizens beyond wiretapping.

The allegation was swiftly denied by a spokesperson for the former president.

US President Donald Trump has backtracked on his explosive wiretapping allegations against former US President, Barack Obama. "Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!"

The FBI is investigating Mr Trump's associates' contacts with Russian Federation during the election, as are House and Senate intelligence committees. In the interview with the Bergen Record, Conway was asked about Trump's unsubstantiated claim Obama spied on him.

No evidence was offered to support the claims, which followed a series of reports from conservative media in the U.S. about alleged efforts to undermine the Trump administration.

On March 4, Trump claimed in a tweet storm that Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower before his election victory, offering no evidence.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway suggested in a new interview, without providing evidence, that the Trump campaign may have been monitored in "any number of ways".

Since then, the White House has been under mounting pressure from the Capitol requesting evidence that the phones at Trump Tower were tapped during the elections. "I wasn't making a suggestion about Trump Tower".
