Review of EPA fuel standards sets up battle with California

Trump to meet with auto industry representatives in Michigan: reports Trump to sign sweeping rollback of Obama-era climate change rules
Saul Franklin | 17 March, 2017, 01:28

One working paper found that the European Union's emissions standards encouraged automakers to develop new technology and to sell more efficient cars.

"We're going to do some wonderful work with you, but you're going to have to help us with jobs", he said. However, unless the Trump administration succeeds in doing that, it's likely that California will adopt the current EPA standards and auto companies will follow along even if Trump trashes the federal rules.

"The Trump administration has created an opportunity for decision-makers to reach a thoughtful and coordinated outcome predicated on the best and most current data", Mitch Bainwol, the president and CEO of the Auto Alliance industry group, said on Wednesday.

"But no more", he said. However, the White House on Tuesday played down another rumoured suggestion that the administration would seek to take away California's right to set its own emissions standards.

President Trump will sign an order Wednesday to formally evaluate the Obama administration's landmark greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars.

The standards stemmed from a 2012 deal between the Obama administration and the industry that combined in a single set of regulations the rules on vehicle emissions, the Corporate Average Fuel Economy or "Café" standards, and California's state requirements. Now, California and over a dozen states, including Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico (2011 model year), New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia have adopted the tougher California standards.

"My administration will work tirelessly to eliminate the industry-killing regulations, to lower the job crushing taxes and to ensure a level playing field for all American companies and workers".

President Trump on Wednesday is making a move seen as good news for the auto industry and bad news for environmental advocates.

"We really need to find a way to strike a balance because we're obviously going to have to have a major conversation with the auto companies because the auto companies are celebrating". "This was a constraint deliberately set up by the previous administration to make it hard to utilize coal, oil and natural gas".

Trump pledged to "fight to keep vehicle production in the United States" and teased a new policy that he'd roll out next week related to the issue.

Bainwol's letter to Pruitt follows a separate letter to Trump from the heads of GM, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota, VW, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan asking him to reverse the rules.

While Trump talked of ending the "assault" on the USA auto industry, it is unclear exactly what he is referring to.

After one participant in the meetings mentioned environmental concerns, Mr Trump said he agreed but did not want an "extra thimbleful of fuel" to get in the way of growth.
