In a partnership with Vesey's Seeds, the cereal giant is sending seeds to anyone who signs up on the website as part of the #BringBacktheBees campaign. "Last year, the children wanted so much to help us that they wrote letters, produced videos and some even sent us the contents of their piggy bank in hopes of helping to save the bees", said Hannah Alper, a 14-year-old environmental activist and young ambassador for the Beat the Bees campaign.

Bees play a crucial role in our food supply.

The company, famous for cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios, which has a bee as its mascot, recently launched a "Bring Back the Bees" campaign. Pollination of most food crops actually occurs by wind and self-pollination, but bees do account for a 10 to 40 percent crop yields for some types of food crops, like strawberries, sunflowers, and chestnuts.

Cheerios is encouraging people to plant the seeds to help the bees restore their normal population.

Over the weekend, the company jumped into defense mode, telling critics on social media that while they "appreciate" those concerns, there's no need for worry because the seeds were chosen specifically to attract "bees" (listed as though they're one generic entity) and "are not considered invasive" - which, at least according to the USDA, doesn't appear to be true at all. The fronts of boxes have a large bright-green callout to "Help Bring Back the Bees". General Mills gave out 1.5 million wildflower seeds to customers in the hopes the seeds would get planted across the US and help the declining bee population.

The brand will also be on hand at the Canada Blooms festival, handing out 50,000 Veseys wildflower seed packs to visitors.

The seeds, once planted, were meant to provide more nectar for the declining bee population.

General Mills has been involved in protecting pollinator habitats since 2011.

General Mills have refuted the claims in a statement on Facebook, saying that their seeds are bee friendly.
