Nearly half of US adults infected with genital HPV

Vaccine credited with HPV virus reduction in Scotland Experts hail vaccine that slashed Scots cervical cancer rate

"It's a very common virus that alters the immune system to favor its own survival", says Einstein, who is professor and chair of New Jersey Medical School's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Women's Health.

Researchers are saying that the new data shows the importance of vaccinating adolescents, especially considering the effectiveness of the vaccines. Between the year 2011 and 2014, the prevalence of this type of virus was 7 percent in citizens aged 18 to 69.

About 80 million Americans are infected with one of the many types of HPV, according to the CDC.

The study found the prevalence of the sexually transmitted virus among young women has fallen by 90% since an immunisation drive began in 2008.

The survey was conducted by analyzing samples of more than 20,000 women, which makes this study one of the largest ever conducted in Scottland's history regarding the impact of a vaccine. Those areas include the cervix and vagina in women, the penis in men, and the anus and neck in both genders.

There are about 12,000 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in the United States annually - and each year, about 4,000 women die from it.

From the start, clinicians have run into some parental and political roadblocks because the vaccine, which is recommended for preteens, protects against genital human papillomavirus - a virus transmitted through sexual contact. Among women ages 20 to 24, the prevalence of these four strains decreased from 18.5 percent to 12.1 percent over that same period. But just 30 percent of girls and 25 percent of boys at that age had received all three doses of the HPV vaccine.

"Some HPV types can cause genital warts and are considered low risk, with a small chance for causing cancer". Again, men were vastly more at risk for these strains than women, with 6.8 percent of men infected, compared with 1.2 percent of women. "It is a cancer vaccine", Paskett said. A specialist in cervical and other gynecologic cancers, he is the study's principal investigator.

The human papillomavirus causes around 90 per cent of anal cancers, 35 per cent of penile cancers and 60 per cent of oropharyngeal cancers (cancer of the back of the throat, including tongue and tonsils) in Australia.

The most serious consequences of the virus still fall on women, according to CDC data: About 39,00 HPV-associated cancers occur in the United States each year, with about 23,000 among women, and about 16,000 among men. As with genital HPV, rates were higher for men than women overall and in all racial and ethnic groups. Asians had the lowest rate of infection, while black adults had the highest rate. "The program is newer for boys, however, and we expect this rate to increase over time", she said.
