The U.S. and Russian space agencies agreed last week to extend Whitson's mission by three months to fill in as the new crew's third member. This will put her in a solid seventh place behind retired cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov, who spent some 679 days aboard the Mir space station over two long-duration missions in 1988 and 1994.

The ISS will remain below its full capacity of six in the near future after Russian Federation chose to cut its contribution to the crew from three to two cosmonauts in a cost-saving measure.

With Kimbrough back home, the leadership was transferred to female astronaut Peggy Whitson.
