US Rep. Maxine Waters: Bill O'Reilly 'needs to go to jail'

Elaine Woods | 11 April, 2017, 09:26

Yet in the last week, at least 52 advertisers - some of them blue chip names, including Mercedes, BMW, Advil, and Jenny Craig - have pulled their advertising from his program, citing new reporting of allegations of sexual harassment and legal settlements paid out by Fox. It's not uncommon for a company to abandon a show at the first sign of controversy, then slip back a few weeks later when things quiet down.

On April 1, The New York Times reported that five women had received payments totaling almost $13 million from either O'Reilly or 21st Century Fox "in exchange for agreeing to not pursue litigation or speak about their" reports about of sexual harassment involving O'Reilly. "I think she either advised him wrong or she's absent, and she's not in it". Last week, the president declared April Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

"Well, it's coming out of the mouth of a man who has said terrible things about women".

One of the companies that hasn't abandoned O'Reilly is Angie's List. The host vehemently denies the claims, saying that as a public figure he is subject to false accusations. ABC News has not been able to independently verify new information in the Times story.

Luke Lappala, a spokesman for Scottevest, said his company "cannot continue to advertise on "The O'Reilly Factor" and directed our media buyer to pull all advertising from the program immediately".

President Donald Trump has come to the defense of embattled Fox News host and conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly.

"We value our partners and are working with them to address their current concerns about 'The O'Reilly Factor, '" Rittenberg said in a statement.

Ailes' lawyer Susan Estrich called Roginsky's allegations "total hogwash".

A Fox News spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

Roginsky's allegations are the latest in a string of misconduct allegations leveled against employees of the company. According to a 2015 survey, one in three women between the ages of 18 and 34 has been sexually harassed at work.

This comes less than a year after Roger Ailes, Fox News founder and former chairman and CEO, resigned following his own sexual harassment scandal.

Shortly after Ailes' resignation, Trump defended him, telling NBC's Meet the Press: "He's been a friend of mine for a long time". The law firm spoke with numerous other women who said they were victims of predatory behavior by Ailes. While Hayes asked a bevy of questions regarding Trump's comments on Syria and his meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II, it was Waters' comments on O'Reilly's harassment charges and Trump's support of O'Reilly that caused him to pause and seemingly force himself not to smile. "It's very sad because he's a very good person".

"I think they are unfounded just based on what I've read", he added.
