'I Think' Susan Rice May Have Committed A Crime

Craig Ferguson | 13 April, 2017, 02:41

The White House charges that it was Rice who may have abused her power as President Barack Obama's national security adviser and effectively snooped on Trump's presidential transition.

Trump made the accusation in an interview with The New York Times and would not say if he reviewed new intelligence to support his claim.

At the same time, he also praised Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, whose show The O'Reilly Factor has been shedding advertisers this week after a Times report revealed he or the company had made payments to five women who had accused him of sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior.

"Well I think the American people have a right to know what was going on". In an interview Tuesday with MSNBC, she said: "The allegation is that somehow the Obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes".

Trump on Wednesday disagreed.

As Herridge notes in her piece, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, who temporarily stepped away from leading the investigation into Russia Thursday morning, expressed deep concern about the details in the reports he presented to the White House.

Trump has also claimed, without evidence, that Obama ordered a wiretap of Trump Tower during the election.

"If so many things are described as the biggest, or the best, or the most - how to tell what really is important to this president?" Unmasking does occur, but it is typically done by intelligence or law-enforcement officials engaged in anti-terror or espionage investigations. The rules specify that in most cases a "generic term", such as "U.S. Person 1" is used, instead of the actual name.

Rice said reports she would receive would occasionally refer to "U.S. persons" who were caught up in legal surveillance. Flynn was sacked after it became clear that he misled Vice President Mike Pence and others about the content of those discussions.

When asked whether Rice, who has denied leaking the names of Trump associates under surveillance by US intelligence agencies, had committed a crime, the president said, "Do I think?"

Rice served as the national security adviser to President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017 and was one of several senior national security officials authorized to request the identity of US persons who appear in classified intelligence reports. And did anyone on his staff have access to this information, as well.

Cohen-Watnick raised his findings about Rice with the White House counsel's office, according to the official.

If Rice had indeed unmasked Trump associates' identities in these foreign surveillance reports, that response wouldn't quite make sense.

If the information involving Americans has no intelligence value, it is supposed to be destroyed. Republicans and Democrats have agreed on the witnesses to be called, Ryan said. Schiff now has seen the same intelligence information as his Republican counterpart and has said nothing in it "justifies such duplicitous conduct" on the White House's behalf.
