US, Mexico, Canada join to launch 2026 World Cup bid

USA, Mexico & Canada Announce Joint Bid for 2026 World Cup US, Mexico, Canada join to launch 2026 World Cup bid

U.S. Soccer, the Mexican football federation, and Canadian soccer association announced on Monday that the three countries are banding together to submit a joint bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The US has co-hosted the Gold Cup with Mexico in 1993 and 2003, while the latest version found Canada share duties using their neighbours to the south.

Despite the plan being revealed Monday afternoon during a press conference on the 102nd floor of the Freedom Tower, the three nations won't learn if their combined bid is successful until May 2020, when Federation Internationale de Football Association is expected to name the hosts of the massive tournament, which will expand from 32 teams to 48 in 2026.

The bid, which as-of-yet has no rivals, is reportedly supported by US President Donald Trump, whose key campaign pledge in the lead up to his election previous year was to build a strengthened wall at the US border with Mexico.

Mexico, USA and Canada have officially announced their bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That could rule out the Rose Bowl-the host of the last U.S. World Cup final in 1994-as a final site. Mexico has hosted the event twice, in 1970 and 1986, while Canada has yet to do so - although it did hold the Women's World Cup in 2015 and a men's under-20 edition in 2007.

"We have the full support of this project from the USA government", Gulati said. However, after a tainted vote saw Russian Federation and Qatar earn hosting rights for the next two World Cups, the power has been returned to FIFA's 211-member Congress after a almost four-decade long gap in voting rights.

Akzo Nobel's battle with PPG escalates amid push to oust chairman
PPG Chief Executive Michael McGarry said last week that the company isn't ruling out a sweetened offer or a hostile bid for Akzo. It wasn't clear if Elliott's move would succeed even if the hedge fund could muster enough votes.

The entirety of Fifa's congress decided on World Cup hosts until 1982, when the power was entrusted to the organization's executive committee of about two dozen members.

Trump's support to bring the World Cup back to America shouldn't be all that surprising.

"Like I said earlier, there will be a (World Cup) champion, but the real winners are soccer and the region to have invited the world to enjoy this celebration". The Russian capital hosts the annual meeting on the eve of the opening match of the 2018 World Cup. Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup (South Africa) while Oceania has never hosted the event. Canada staged a widely-praised women's tournament two years ago. Fox Sports characterized the 1994 games as playing "a pivotal part in accelerating the growth of the game in the U.S". The US will host every match from the quarter-finals and the following rounds.

U.S. soccer officials had been publicly coy about the possibility of a future World Cup bid since the country lost out to Qatar in the battle for the 2022 tournament at a corruption-tarnished vote in Zurich in 2010.

All three countries boast world-class stadiums that would be suitable venues for the tournament.
