USA backs down on anti-Trump Twitter account

Government drops demands to unmask @ALT_USCIS after Twitter files lawsuit Twitter: US backs down on seeking anti-Trump user records

The federal government has abandoned its effort to compel Twitter for information involving an anti-Trump account after its request spurred the social networking service to file suit.

In a Thursday interview, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer now representing the account declined to discuss anything about the person or people currently involved in the account being targeted by the Trump administration.

What is most likely is that the Justice Department re-evaluated its chances of winning the case and decided the odds were stacked against it. Jamie Lee Williams, a staff attorney for privacy group the Electronic Frontier Foundation said: "It seemed like a blatant attempt to censor or chill the people behind this account, or to retaliate against people who are speaking out against this administration". She noted that the government's summons to Twitter had boilerplate language but lacked a specific reason for wanting to know the identities. Besides attacking immigration measures, the account highlighted waste and mismanagement in Uscis and in DHS as a whole.

Twitter said it received a summons on March 14 demanding that it provide records that would unmask the @ALT_uscis account, such as user names, account login phone numbers, mailing addresses and computer IP addresses.

There are suspicions that these "alt" government Twitter accounts, of which there are several now, are run by current or former federal employees.

"The rights of free speech afforded Twitter's users and Twitter itself under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution include a right to disseminate such anonymous or pseudonymous political speech".

"We are very heartened that Twitter is standing up for its users and making such full-throated defense of their free-speech rights", Bhandari said.

It was not immediately clear why the government had withdrawn the summons, or whether it had closed an investigation it said it was conducting.

Twitter went to court in San Francisco to block the move, saying the CBP was "abusing a limited-purpose investigatory tool" and stifling freedom of speech. The posts had been public. In its original action Twitter argued that giving up the information would have a "chilling effect" on government tricks.
