FBI Obtained Warrant to Monitor Former Trump Adviser Carter Page's Communications
14 April, 2017, 16:31
The FBI obtained a secret court order last summer to monitor Page's communications because the government had reason to believe Page was acting as a Russian agent, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The former Trump foreign policy adviser in the eye of a partisan storm over his role in the 2016 presidential campaign said Wednesday that allegations he acted as a Russian agent "were a joke", while Capitol Hill investigators privately say they're continuing to wrestle with the witness list for upcoming congressional inquiries into alleged Kremlin meddling in the 2016 elections.
The Post, citing unnamed law enforcement and other US officials, said Tuesday the government surveillance application laid out the basis for believing that Page had knowingly engaged in intelligence activities on Russia's behalf.
FBI Director James Comey confirmed last month that the agency has been investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia since last July, as part of a larger investigation into Russian attempts to meddle with the US election, but said he could not provide any details about the investigation.
His name is Carter Page, and he was a foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump during the election.
John says it's unclear how much Trump knew about the surveillance of Page when he issued his controversial tweet.
In March 2016, Trump named Page as one of his small team of foreign policy advisors, and Page attended the Republican convention in July, where he and others met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

FISA warrants are granted sparingly, secretly, and require the approval from top Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department officials.
According to the information, the application cited contacts Mr. Page had with a Russian intelligence operative in New York City in Y 2013. "If it is true or partially true, President Trump is confronted yet again third or fourth time in his presidency with intelligence leaks meant to embarrass, humiliate or manipulate him".
The revelation provided the most detailed evidence of the FBI's suspicion that the Trump campaign may have been working with Russian agents during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Page on Thursday dismissed the FISA claims on a "dodgy dossier" of "false evidence" sent by former Sen. Page said he was in Moscow to meet with businessmen and politicians. "If they are looking for Carter Page, they will not tell anyone they're looking for him, not even the court".
Page has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in his dealings with the Trump campaign or Russian Federation, the newspaper reported. "I can assure you of that", Carter told Tapper. According to KellyAnne Conway in the Washington Post article that was published a year ago, "I have not spoken with him at all, in fact, meaning he's not part of our national security or foreign policy briefings that we do now at all, certainly not since I have become campaign manager", she said. In the summer of 2016, he delivered a speech in which he was critical of the United States approach to Russian Federation.
