Fleury makes late start, Penguins rush by Blue Jackets 3-1

He had been stabbed with a screwdriver during the altercation, but he refused medical treatment until the end of the Penguins playoff game.

"It felt like it's been awhile", Fleury said.

If there is one thing that Fleury does that always seems to put him in harm's way, it's coming out to play the puck when there is opposition pressure.

Columbus rookie defenseman Zach Werenski, who has been out with an injury since a big hit from Alex Ovechkin in a loss to Washington April 2, participated in practice Tuesday and Tortorella said Werenski is "good to go". It might not of mattered who was in goal for the Penguins as the Jackets were unable to turn their shots into scoring chances. Kessel has become near automatic when it comes to generating postseason points over the course of his career and, after picking up a goal and an assist during the Penguins' 3-1 win Wednesday, he has 45 points in 47 career playoff games. As much as most would prefer Murray, I think we can all agree that Fleury being counted on to win a home playoff game is just a touch more comforting than having to rely on Jeff Zatkoff. Anyways, fast forward a year, and rewind to last night, and Fleury was the one getting the unsuspecting call-only this time during warm-ups-as Matt Murray suffered what was deemed by Mike Sullivan as a lower body injury.

The Pittsburgh Penguins welcomed the Columbus Blue Jackets to PPG Paints Arena with open arms, and plenty of open ice. Fleury withstood an early push by Columbus, and the Penguins responded by pulling away from the untested Blue Jackets. Thankfully for him, the Penguins won, 3-1, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Phil Kessel struggled down the stretch run of the regular season. The strategy worked for the first period as they had Pittsburgh thrown off their game and held a 16-3 shot advantage. The competitiveness of that series (five games were decided by one goal) appeared to be the start of Columbus' bid to battle the Penguins for regional supremacy. With goaltenders, especially in this unique situation where the Penguins have two legitimate starters, it's best to ride the hot hand as long as you can.

Kessel waited out Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky while on the power play before firing a shot top corner to give the Pens a 2-0 lead. Fleury was brilliant in the Penguins 3-1 win. He also made an impressive play to assist on the opening goal when he kicked a pass from Malkin to Bryan Rust, who eventually buried it from the slot. Kessel scored on the power play to make it 2-0 and nearly made it 3-0 on this breakaway.
