Romo basks in honorary day with Mavs before Nuggets' win

Damon Campbell | 14 April, 2017, 16:29

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo goes up for a shot during warm ups before an NBA basketball game between the Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks in Dallas, Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

Romo will spend Tuesday night on the Mavericks' bench when the team faces the Denver Nuggets at 8:30 p.m. ET, and he won't see any playing time. "And that's not really what this is about".

"Signing him and stuff like that, would have been too much for a lot of reasons", Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said before the game.

While the Dallas Cowboys' franchise quarterback for most of the past decade has yet to have an official sendoff with the team he played for, another professional sports team in the city is closing out their regular season at home with Romo in a ceremonial role.

After getting to pretend he was a starter during the introductions, Romo took the floor to address fans at the end of a brief ceremony in which Carlisle and Nowitzki also spoke.

"I feel like they're all 7 feet tall", Romo said. Romo says the team reached out to him last week about letting them honor his athletic career in North Texas. "Just in the sense that you're lucky enough to be in a position that someone cares enough to do something to honor you". I'm excited by it because Tony has become a friend of mine and you can hear the enthusiasm in his voice. Retired NBA player Caron Butler recently stated that he believed Romo would have made it in the NBA if he pursued basketball after high school.

A long line of media members followed Romo off the court, then filled the room where Carlisle does his game-day interviews. Nowitzki recognized Romo before CBS' newest National Football League analyst took the microphone and said, "We're going to make the Denver Nuggets wait 10 more minutes here".

"It's been overwhelming. I mean, I've had close to 600 text messages that I'm still working on, you know, 100 or so calls and a bunch of other stuff", Romo said. "Never forced a bad shot because he was always in control and he saw what was going on around him". The NFL rushing leader for the NFC East champs was there in Romo's No. 9 football jersey. As a senior at Burlington High School.

Butler starred at Racine Park High School, averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds before moving on to UConn and a 14-year National Basketball Association career with nine teams.

With his basketball skills, Butler said Romo could have made it to the NBA, if only he opted to continue playing hoops.

With Westbrook resting for the first time this season, Oladipo also had nine rebounds and six assists, and the Thunder outrebounded Minnesota 54-35.
