Vettel then tried to cut short the gap to Hamilton, but the Mercedes driver did not commit any mistake and managed to take chequered flag to clinch his 54th Grand Prix victory. He spent the rest of the day catching up, only to finish in sixth place.

"I think at the moment we're a bit in a lonely competition because in front of us they are too quick and behind us they are too slow".

Niki Lauda thinks that Formula 1 is heading for a season-long battle between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

'The ultimate fighter always wants the best battle that you can have because when you come out on top it is so much more satisfying. Verstappen's Red Bull team are off the pace of Mercedes and Ferrari this season, but surely it is only a matter of when, rather than if, Verstappen will win his first title.

His Ferrari team pulled him into the pits to change to slick tyres on just the second lap following the deployment of the virtual safety auto as Lance Stroll was punted out of the race by Sergio Perez.

"I really hope it is an out-and-out fight through stubbornness, through mental stability, through fitness, composure and through just out-driving the person on track".

"It would be great news for us", Vettel said.

British woman stabbed to death in Jerusalem
The historic area was packed with Christians celebrating Good Friday and Jews celebrating Passover at the time of the stabbing. The woman, reportedly in her mid-20s, died of multiple stab wounds to her upper body at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus.

Highly rated youngster Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, rose the grid from 16th to finish in third and move up to the same position in the overall standings.

"I think I had the pace to control, being in that position, but if there wasn't a safety vehicle it would have been a flat out race, couple of seconds between us the whole way probably, because we were very close in lap time", Hamilton said. The first incident of the race happened on the opening lap itself, when Force India's Sergio Perez collided with the Williams of Lance Stroll, spinning the latter's vehicle on to the gravel.

Vettel's race was scuppered by a sheer bad luck.

It is already looking like a straight shoot-out between Formula One's two most decorated current competitors as the Mercedes man looks to equal Vettel's four drivers's titles.

It was a unusual beginning to the second race of the year but Vettel - who finished second behind Hamilton - was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The veteran Spanish driver had been running eighth at the time, a strong race considering McLaren's considerable mechanical issues to start the season.
