Granted, Apple's rumored interest especially in Toshiba's flash memory modules extends to possibly taking a stake of around 20 percent with an investment of "at least several billion dollars", in which case SoftBank or Foxconn may also still get in on the transaction. It is noteworthy that a large amount of Apple's iPhones are produced at Foxconn's enterprise there.

Toshiba has put its memory chips business up for sale to make up for a writedown of ¥716.6 billion ($6.56 billion) in its USA nuclear equipment operations. Apple is considering a range of options from partnering with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.to joining with Japanese investors on a bid, said the people, asking not to be named because the matter is private.

The Japanese company has already narrowed down the list of contenders for the chip business after the initial round of bidding. Western Digital, Toshiba's partner in the memory chip business, claims that by selling the division, Toshiba will violate a joint venture contract they both signed.

On Tuesday Toshiba warned it may not continue as a 'going concern.

Toshiba shares rally on rumours of much-needed cash injection by Apple. It's unclear whether Apple participated in the first round of the auction, which sources have said drew around 10 offers.

'I Think' Susan Rice May Have Committed A Crime
Flynn was sacked after it became clear that he misled Vice President Mike Pence and others about the content of those discussions. Rice said reports she would receive would occasionally refer to "U.S. persons" who were caught up in legal surveillance.

Shares in Toshiba fell 5 percent on Friday, hit by a Bloomberg report that the chip business sale had been temporarily put on hold to address the concerns raised by Western Digital, which Toshiba denied.

The company is presently accepting bids for the memory chip business.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has expressed his confidence in acquiring Toshiba's chip unit, implying that the group's chipmaking unit would take a different approach when the real race begins.

Toshiba needs to raise money from the semiconductor sale to plug the hole in its balance sheet, but the bidding process so far has been rocky.
