Barcelona collapse in Malaga, Neymar sees red

Damon Campbell | 15 April, 2017, 03:36

As he made his way off the pitch, he appeared to sarcastically applaud the officials - an offence which could see a one-match ban topped up.

Referee Gil Manzano included Neymar's sarcastic applause in his report to the Spanish federation's competition committee, which will meet on Wednesday to decide the length of his suspension.

This could result in up to three matches being added to Neymar's suspension.

As things stand, Barcelona trail their great rivals by three points in the race for top spot, although they have played a game more.

Neymar was sent-off as Barcelona lost further ground on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga in a shock 2-0 defeat to Malaga on Saturday night.

But he could receive a longer ban if his reaction to the red card is deemed as contempt of the officials, which would mean he would miss the potentially season-defining El Clasico at the Bernabeu on 23 April.

The Brazilian forward was shown a freaky yellow card in the first-half for tying his boot laces next to the ball, stopping the hosts from taking a free-kick in the process.

While Barcelona are expected to appeal the decision, it is unlikely their appeal will be successful and they will just have to make do without the talented Brazilian for the aforementioned games.

The red card was Neymar's first since joining Barcelona from Santos in 2013 and Luis Enrique was not convinced the attacker deserved his dismissal.

"I think the interpretation of the yellow cards is special", said Enrique.

Neymar picked up a pair of senseless yellow cards on Saturday and got sent off with 25 minutes left and his team trailing by a goal at Malaga.

'The rules are to be interpreted, but they should be the same for all'. "It's curious, but we're used to it".

Real Madrid is still leading La Liga with 72 points, followed by Barcelona with 69 points.
