Trump praises Gorsuch after confirmation

Craig Ferguson | 15 April, 2017, 03:00

The Republican majority Senate voted 54-45 in favour of Gorsuch, giving President Donald Trump a major political victory. The Denver appeals court justice restores a conservative majority on the bench that could last for decades.

One Republican senator, Johnny Isakson (Ga.), did not vote because, as his office explained in a statement, he was "in Georgia today recovering from two back surgeries".

The outcome was a major win for Trump, as well as for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who kept Scalia's seat open after the justice's death in February 2016.

Fox News reports that as many as five new SCOTUS seats are likely to be filled under Trump's administration, and there is no reason to think that any of these appointees will be anything but conservative. Gorsuch's confirmation as the 113th Supreme Court justice is expected on April 7.

Foreign journalists in North Korea told to prepare for 'big' event
South Korean and USA officials and the think tank have been saying for weeks that North Korea could test a sixth bomb at any time. Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin later tweeted that senior defense sources told her the NBC report was "wildly wrong".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said of the rules change that won approval: "It will make the cooling saucer of the Senate considerably hotter, and I believe it will make the Supreme Court a more partisan place". The court did not give a time for the White House event. "So it is indeed a proud day", McConnell said. That means that in the future, when certain cases are brought to the Supreme Court, the issues at hand might be interpreted differently from the way the slight majority of the court has lately been ruling. He told reporters that he views his refusal to fill Scalia's seat, which was initially questioned by some fellow Republicans, as "the most consequential decision I've ever been involved in". In exit polls, 21 percent of voters called Supreme Court appointments "the most important factor" for their votes, and among those people 56 percent voted for Trump.

On Thursday, they successfully filibustered Gorsuch using a 60-vote cloture rule that prompted Republicans to undo the threshold, upending long-standing Senate tradition.

Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma said of McConnell's tactic: "No. 1, it's courageous".
