The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Thursday to end its 13-year-long peacekeeping mission in Haiti over the coming six months and replace it with a smaller police.
Liu expressed hope that the worldwide community, including countries in the region, will continue to contribute to improving conditions in Haiti, help build a stronger national police force, and support the government's effort to maintain stability.
"We regard the transformation of the Haiti mission, including the withdrawal of the military, as a strong example for how peacekeeping missions can and should change as a country's political situation changes", Haley told the council.
The mission also has been dogged by controversy in recent years. It's important to prevent a security void.
The closure of the $346 million mission, recommended by U.N. chief Antonio Guterres, comes as the United States looks to cut its funding to U.N. peacekeeping. "It shows quite the contrary, that we can develop, change and adapt our activity to the situation on the field, while guided by the need to meet the aspirations of the people".

In Haiti, the mission known by its acronym MINUSTAH, was deployed in 2004 after the departure of president Jean-Bertrand Aristide to help stem political violence but it has not endeared itself to Haitians. And some troops also have been implicated in sexual abuse, including of hungry young children, an issue reported on Wednesday by The Associated Press. No money spent on United Nations work to advance the rule of law in Haiti will have its intended impact unless the organization models the accountability that is necessary to re-establish its credibility. It has suffered major natural disasters, including an quake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew a year ago.
United Nations peacekeepers have been accused of sexual abuse and blamed for a cholera outbreak.
An outbreak of cholera in 2010 was introduced by Nepalese UN peacekeepers serving in the mission. Some 9,300 have died and more than 800,000 people sickened.
"China supports the recommendation by this Security Council and the Secretary General and hopes MINUSTAH withdraws in an orderly manner, while ensuring stability in Haiti", he said. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley told the council on Thursday of a sex ring allegedly run by at least 134 Sri Lankan peacekeepers, who lured children with food. Countries that refuse to hold their soldiers accountable must recognize that this either stops or their troops will go home and their financial compensation will end.. "We expect the U.N.to fulfil its commitments", said Moise spokesman Jura.
