April the Giraffe FINALLY Gives Birth!!!

Elaine Woods | 17 April, 2017, 05:36

"For about 10 days you can vote on any name or names you choose for April's new calf", according to the website. The gender of the calf was not yet known, and its name was to be determined through a competition run by the park.

April became internet famous when her pregnancy was live-streamed by the zoo, which is located in rural New York, three hours northwest of New York City.

Five things to know about April and her newborn.

If you remember, a live video feed of a very pregnant April was started back in February.

The Animal Adventure Park's Facebook page has over a million fans, and the Animal Adventure Park's YouTube channel has a whopping 500,000 subscribers. People around the world have been tuning in daily.

Although the official stats aren't in yet, April's calf likely stands about 6 feet tall and weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. The proud papa, a 5-year-old giraffe named Oliver, watched from an adjacent pen.

"Bulls (male giraffes) only really care about two things", the park told TNYT, "fighting and the unmentionable". The calf will stay with April and its father for six to 12 months, and then be moved to another facility for safety reasons. While many people thought that April was preggers for longer than that, it turns out that the zoo's owner admitted that they were wrong on April's conception timeline, which means they were wrong on when April would be giving birth.

The news service adds that the zoo plans on a naming contest. Animal Adventure says it can't keep the offspring because that could lead to incestuous mating.

The park is now closed to the public and will open in mid-May.
