"The Mother of All Bombs" hit a mountainside in Nangarhar Province, eastern Afghanistan.

The massive bomb terrified villagers 20 miles away across the border in Pakistan with a blast they described as earsplitting.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, said the decision to drop the bomb "sends a clear message that the United States is committed and determined to defeating ISIS and other terrorist organizations in Afghanistan".

The strike was carried out against an Islamic State group tunnel complex carved in the mountains that Afghan forces have tried repeatedly in past weeks to assault in fierce fighting in recent weeks in Nangarhar province, Afghan officials said.

US President Donald Trump had earlier called the mission "very, very successful". It was so massive it had to be dropped from the rear of a cargo plane, said the Pentagon.

US General John Nicholson, Nato commander in Afghanistan, said: "This is the right weapon for the right target".

The blast destroyed three underground tunnels as well as weapons and ammunition, but no civilians were hurt, Afghan and United States officials claimed.

The strike was created to minimise the risk to Afghan and US forces conducting clearing operations in the area while maximising the destruction of IS fighters and facilities, said the US Forces-Afghanistan, which is part of NATO-led Resolute Support.

Afghanistan's Ambassador to the U.S. Hamdullah Mohib said the colossal Massive Ordinance Air Blast Bomb was dropped after fighting had intensified over the last week.

"I don't think you can put a dollar amount on somebody's legs, on an American soldier's life", he said, noting that just a week a Green Beret was killed in the area. Afghan media quoted locals as saying they saw flames at the bombed site.

But the group has been steadily losing ground in the face of heavy pressure both from USA air strikes and a ground offensive led by Afghan forces.

Isis has claimed that the so-called "mother of all bombs" dropped by U.S. forces on a mountain hideout in Afghanistan did not kill any militants.

The number of Islamic State fighters killed by a massive U.S. bomb in eastern Afghanistan has almost tripled to at least 90, Afghan officials said on Saturday. "Assessment of the casualties to the ISIS-K is in process", the Afghan Presidential Palace said in a statement.

Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States, told VOA that the Afghan national security forces, backed by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, had been conducting military operations in eastern Nangarhar against IS forces for a week before Thursday's bombing, and that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by extremist fighters had made it hard to advance.
