North Korean missile explodes on launch

Pence aims to reassure allies amid North Korea threat North Korea nuclear programme: US 'working with China' on response
Saul Franklin | 19 April, 2017, 05:48

The Fighters for Free North Korea said its members sent some 300,000 leaflets from a mountain in Gimpo, just west of Seoul, starting at 5 a.m., condemning the North Korean regime and its role in the assassination of leader Kim Jong-un's elder half brother, Kim Jong-nam, in February in Malaysia.

China has spoken out against its missile and nuclear tests and has supported United Nations sanctions.

Pence told reporters near the DMZ that President Donald Trump was hopeful that China would use its "extraordinary levers" to pressure the North to abandon its weapons program, a day after the North's failed missile launch.

Pence will be diving into a tense standoff along the Korean Peninsula with visits to South Korea and Japan beginning Sunday. And since both countries rely nearly entirely on America on defence and security issues, the rise of North Korea in WMDs becomes a direct concern of the US. The United States, South Korea and other countries have vowed to apply more pressure on the North, but so far nothing has worked to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program. He is in South Korea as part of a 10-day tour of Asia.

Part of his mission will be to reassure allies in South Korea and Japan that the USA will defend them against North Korean aggression without acting in a way that might tip the region into open conflict. And this is the crux of the matter.

The North Koreans use Sinpo shipyard for their submarine activity, and U.S. satellites have observed increased activity there in April, a U.S. official said at the time of the previous test.

Ahead of Pence's arrival, North Korea's vice foreign minister told The Associated Press in an interview that Trump was the culprit of escalating tensions through his tweets and expansion of military exercises, arguing that the USA was becoming "more vicious and more aggressive" under Trump compared to his predecessor.

Pence arrived in the region a day after North Korea celebrated the birth anniversary of the country's late founder with a military parade showing off missiles and military hardware. "We will see what happens!"

If North Korea was still in doubt about America's seriousness, the attack on Syria two weeks ago left no one in doubt about Trump's readiness to explore the military option in pushing his positions in his global engagements.

"If I were President Trump, I wouldn't want to go before the American people in 2020 and say, well, you know, we gave it the junior college try and we decided there's nothing we can do about this", Hill added.

China reiterates opposition to South Korea's THAAD anti-missile system
China says its powerful radar can penetrate its territory and undermine its security and spoke out against it again on Monday. Trump's strategy isn't exactly a departure from long-standing United States policy.

A North Korean official newspaper Rodong Sinmun in a report last week echoed the country's official position saying North would respond to military attacks from the US.

US Pacific Command said it tracked a missile launch at 5:21 p.m. ET and said the missile blew up nearly immediately.

"North Korea is a liability to everybody and it's a threat not just to the United States, not just to South Korea, not just to Japan, not just to Russian Federation, but it's actually a threat to China as well", McFarland said Sunday on "Fox News Sunday".

"It is possible the North may wage greater provocations such as a nuclear test timed with various anniversaries including the Supreme People's Assembly", Hwang was quoted to have said.

North Korea showed two new kinds of ICBM enclosed in canister launchers mounted on the back of trucks, suggesting Pyongyang was working towards a "new concept" of ICBM, said Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the US -based Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California. The Assembly merely reviewed the annual budget performance and the leader announced some personal appointments.

North Korea on Friday denounced the United States for bringing "huge nuclear strategic assets" to the region as the USS Carl Vinson strike group with a flag-ship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier steamed closer.

The above scenario presents the world community with a nightmare of nuclear warfare.

"The North doesn't seem to be quite at the place to test an ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile)", the official told CNN.

In the event of an attack, analysts reason that the regime in Pyongyang could act out of desperation and unleash the nuclear war heads on the enemy targets.
