North Korea flaunts long-range missiles in birthday parade

North Korea threatens retaliation; China urges restraint Rain in Pyongyang as North Koreans prepare for 'Day of the Sun'

The portraits of late leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are seen lit at dawn at Kim Il Sung Square on Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Pyongyang, North Korea.

The new strategy will be deployed at a time of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. However, the display did show that North Korea is still going right ahead with their missile development program.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis issued a brief statement Saturday evening on behalf of President Donald Trump, who was at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida resort.

Kim did not speak during the annual parade, which celebrates the 1912 birthday of his late grandfather Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founding ruler, but a top official warned that the North would stand up to any threat posed by the United States.

During a fellowship meal after the services, he said the tensions on the Korean peninsula had put into sharp focus the importance of the joint U.S.

"We will respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack", said Choe, widely seen by analysts as North Korea's No. 2 official.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence declared Monday the "era of strategic patience is over" with North Korea, expressing impatience with the speed and willingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said Han's remarks on the North's readiness to conduct a nuclear test and even go to war reveal the "true colours of North Korea's government that is bellicose and a breaker of regulations".

North Korea saw the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya - neither of whom had nuclear weapons - as proof of the weapons' power.

"We stand alongside our global partners in making clear that North Korea must adhere to United Nations resolutions created to secure peace and stability in the region and stop its pursuit of nuclear weapons". Han said if the US shows any sign of "reckless" military aggression, Pyongyang is ready to launch a pre-emptive strike of its own.

Pyongyang has also expressed anger over the ongoing annual spring military exercises the US holds with South Korea, which it considers a rehearsal for invasion.

Japan says differences with US on economic talks
The announcement followed an inaugural meeting Tuesday of the U.S. -Japan Economic Dialogue in Tokyo chaired by visiting U.S. The trip so far has been dominated by US and allies' concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development efforts.

China, North Korea's sole major ally and neighbour which nevertheless opposes its weapons programme, on Friday again called for talks to defuse the crisis.

"Though analysts questioned what was inside the missile shells, they said the appearance of a submarine-launched ballistic missile shows North Korea is progressing with its plan to launch missiles from anywhere in the sea".

Along with the deployment of the US aircraft carrier and other vessels into waters off the Korean Peninsula, thousands of USA and South Korean troops, tanks and other weaponry were deployed last month in their biggest joint military exercises.

North Korea, still technically at war with the South after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce but not a treaty, has on occasion conducted missile or nuclear tests to coincide with big political events and often threatens the United States, South Korea and Japan.

The parade also included large rockets covered by canisters in two different types of transporter erector launcher trucks, or TELs.

The North has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering all the necessary technology.

Pointing to the quarter-century since North Korea first obtained nuclear weapons, the vice president said a period of patience followed.

The Pukguksong-1 SLBM, which the USA calls the KN-11, was first displayed and tested in April 2016. Under his watch, North Korea has aggressively pursued a goal of putting a nuclear warhead on an ICBM capable of reaching the US mainland.

"However, North Korea has a habit of showing off new concepts in parades before they ever test or launch them", Hanham said.

North Korea conducted two nuclear tests past year alone, advancing its goal to make nuclear weapons small enough to fit on long-range missiles.

This year, however, the holiday also showcased what appeared to be long-range and submarine-based missiles: weapons the country has always been warned against possessing.
