The high court in Pretoria on Thursday gave President Jacob Zuma one week to say why he fired his finance and deputy finance minsters in late March - and so gave Zuma an unenviable choice: admit he used an irregular (and possibly illegal) "intelligence report" in making that decision, or admit he lied to alliance partners about his reasons.
Reacting to the ruling, ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said: "This judgment signifies unfettered encroachment of the judiciary into the realm of the executive - pandering to the whims of the opposition who want to co-govern with the popularly elected government through the courts".
The president defended his actions saying he was exercising his prerogative to hire and fire ministers in terms of section 91 (2) of the Constitution which also protects from giving reasons for his actions.
The ANC says the court ruling amounts to opposition parties using the judiciary to police political decisions and sets a very worrisome precedent.
