Trump begins effort to pack courts with conservatives

Tracy Craig | 09 May, 2017, 00:36

Among them are Michigan State Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen, who Trump will reportedly nominate to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth District, and Minnesota State Supreme Court Justice David Stras, who Trump will reportedly nominate to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Building off his highly successful appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, Fox News reported that Trump has a strong list of constitutional conservatives that he's ready to announce.

A White House official said Monday that a formal announcement would come later in the day, with names released at an afternoon press briefing.

The Trump administration will name almost a dozen federal judges as nominees for key posts today.

Less than two hours after Justice Antonin Scalia's death, McConnell cravenly made a decision to hold his vacancy open for more than a year, refusing even to give US Appeals Court Judge Merrick Garland - President Obama's eventual nominee to the Court - a hearing, much less a vote on the Senate floor.

After the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected his immigration ban, Trump emphatically tweeted last February "SEE YOU IN COURT!" While Supreme Court vacancies capture national attention, a president can leave a lasting legacy by getting like-minded justices confirmed to US district, circuit and other courts across the country.

Larsen, a former professor at the University of Michigan law school, has served on the Michigan Supreme Court bench since November 2015 and has written majority opinions in four cases.

Stras formerly clerked for conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and is known to share the view of a limited role for the judiciary.
