Betsy DeVos delivers speech to graduates at Bethune-Cookman University on May 10.
After Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was rudely shouted down by left-wing students during a commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University on Wednesday, NBC's Today and CBS This Morning actually attempted to justify the disrespectful behavior. Most the students believe that her speech was made for political reasons and not because she had the universities best interests at heart, reports Al Jazeera.
Jackson, an African-American and a Republican, and some others defended the choice of DeVos as the graduation speaker for the school, which was named for black educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune.
"One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with from those with whom we disagree", Secretary DeVos said.
The situation got so bad that Edison O. Jackson, the president of the Bethune-Cookman University, interrupted DeVos' speech to ask the graduating class and their guests return to their seats and remain quiet. "Choose which way you want to go", Jackson warned.

Students and alumni had petitioned to block Secretary DeVos from speaking. Dozens of activists lined a sidewalk early Wednesday; their signs included "DeVos is not worthy". She understood, however, the great value of education, and she understood the nuances of how to balance delicate and hard relationships in order to achieve her ultimate goal of building an institution of higher learning, of which we are the beneficiaries today.
"DeVos was here to hear our differences and at the end of the day I think that's what happened", added Keith Holt, who received a master's degree in transformative leadership.
"And while we will undoubtedly disagree at times, I hope we can do so respectfully", she said. "While we may share differing points of view, my visit and dialogue with students leaves me encouraged and committed to supporting HBCUs".
