The WHO also said it and its partners are supporting Congo in its response.

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC), which Duchin described as the USA "mothership" for handling such epidemics, defines Ebola as a rare and deadly disease spread by direct contact with blood or body fluids of a person infected with the Ebola virus, or by contact with a contaminated object or infected animal. Almost 29,000 total cases, 15,000 of which were confirmed in a lab, were reported in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea in what was the deadliest outbreak of the disease in history. The virus is passed from animals to humans and can spread quickly through a community via contact with an infected person's broken skin, mucous membranes, and bodily fluids like blood. Among the 5,837 people who got the vaccine, no Ebola cases were recorded.

In June previous year WHO declared Liberia, the last country still fighting the world's worst outbreak of the disease, free of active Ebola virus transmission.

"But, we always take this very seriously", WHO Congo spokesman Eric Kabambi told Reuters.

Ebola is a fast-spreading virus and fatal in 90 percent of cases as there's no specific treatment. World Health Organization notes that it "was informed" about the cluster of cases 9 May and the confirmation of the one case occurred 2 days later.

Describing the outbreak as "a public health crisis of global importance", the WHO said that teams of experts from UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and Medecins Sans Frontieres will arrive in the country this weekend. A national team of personnel, along with experts and specialists from Médecins Sans Frontières, the US Centre for Disease Control, Unicef and World Health Organization, will be following in the next few days.

An investigation team led by the ministry of health with WHO support was expected to reach the scene of the outbreak in the coming days, the WHO said.

The last Ebola outbreak in Congo in 2014 was quickly contained and killed 49 people, according to official figures.

Since Ebola virus was first identified in 1976, sporadic outbreaks have been reported in Africa. "The vaccine, called rVSV-ZEBOV, was studied in a trial involving 11,841 people during 2015". So it is likely to decrease as the vaccine is used over time.
