NHS Trust hit by cyber attack

Lucas Bell | 13 May, 2017, 09:51

Writing in the British Medical Journal, he said: "We should be prepared: more hospitals will nearly certainly be shut down by ransomware this year".

Britain's National Cyber Security Centre said it was aware of the attack and investigating. In addition, multiple National Health Service trusts in England say they've been hit with ransomware.

A statement from NHS Digital - the computer services arm of the health service - said at least 16 hospitals or doctor's offices had been directly affected by the attack.

"The ransomware used in this attack is relatively new - it was first seen in February 2017, and the latest variant emerged earlier today". The attack appeared to exploit a vulnerability purportedly identified for use by the U.S. National Security Agency and later leaked to the internet.

Patients at both the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven are being asked to only attend accident and emergency departments unless it is absolutely necessary.

Last fall, we reported on a somewhat humorous report of a mere "reply all" email that managed to bring down email servers of the UK's National Health Service.

Hospitals across England have fallen victim to what appears to be a coordinated ransomware attack that has affected facilities diverting patients to hospitals not hit by the malware. "At this stage, we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed".

The cyber attacks prompted other Spanish firms such as power company Iberdrola and utility Gas Natural to take preventive measures.

A spokesman for Barts Health NHS Trust in London said it was experiencing "major IT disruption" and delays at all four of its hospitals.

"The financial impact of the attack on Telefonica should be significant, and goes far beyond the ransom being demanded", Kroustek said in a statement provided to International Business Times, noting that about 85 percent of the company's computers have been infected and employees have been sent home.

"Currently, we have recorded more than 45,000 attacks of the WannaCry ransomware in 74 countries around the world, mostly in Russian Federation", cyber security firm Kaspersky says.

Mid-Essex Clinical Commissioning Group, which runs hospitals and ambulances in an area east of London, said on Twitter that it had "an IT issue affecting some NHS computer systems", adding "Please do not attend Accident And Emergency unless it's an emergency!"

A reporter from the Health Service Journal said the attack had affected X-ray imaging systems, pathology test results, phone systems and patient administration systems.
