Donald Trump 'may replace White House communications team with Fox News producers'

Craig Ferguson | 14 May, 2017, 04:20

It left the team charged with explaining the decision to the American people with just an hour's notice and no real discussion with Mr Trump himself.

He added: "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

Minutes earlier, Trump issued his thinly veiled threat to Comey, an extraordinary development in the ongoing feud between the President and the agencies investigating alleged ties between his campaign and Russian Federation.

Mr Comey, who had been leading an inquiry into possible collusion between Trump election campaign officials and Russian Federation, was sacked on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Trump, as part of a 7-tweet rant that started before 8:00 a.m. on Friday, also ripped the "fake" media and suggested that he might cancel the White House daily press briefings that have been a hallmark of presidential administrations since the Woodrow Wilson administration more than 100 years ago.

Trump, in an interview Thursday with NBC, said he had been intending to fire Comey for months and that it had nothing to do with the Russian Federation investigation.

The man who took over as acting FBI director, Andrew McCabe, sidestepped a question during a Senate hearing on Thursday on whether he ever heard Comey tell Trump that the president was not the subject of investigation.

"There was no evidence that rose to that level, at that time, that found its way in to the intelligence community assessment, which we had pretty high confidence in", the former director of national intelligence said of collusion between Trump campaign aides and Russians, referring also to the USA intelligence assessment that Russia tried to influence the presidential election in favor of Trump.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein plan to interview four candidates on Saturday for a nominee that Trump will send to the Senate.

Their message that Mr Trump made a decision to fire Mr Comey after reading a memo from the Department of Justice was reversed by Mr Trump himself the next day. "I think he asked for the dinner".

The White House has provided no set timeline for the process of replacing Comey.

The core issue here is not whether Trump is secretly recording his meetings or telephone calls (Trump and his White House aides refuse to say whether he tapes his visitors, something he was suspected of doing when he was in business in New York). "I mean it depends on how you define loyalty". A spokesperson for the president told reporters, "We want [the investigation] to come to its conclusion with integrity".

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told MSNBC on Friday he had spoken to Mr Comey before the dinner, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation head had said he was "uneasy" about it as it might compromise his inquiry.

He has viewed even senior advisers suspiciously, including Steve Bannon and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, when stories about internal White House in-fighting make it to the media.

We also request all documents, memoranda, analyses, emails, and other communications relating to the President's decision to dismiss Director Comey.
