Senate Needs To Move Fast On Healthcare Before Overhauling Tax Code

Mae Harvey | 14 May, 2017, 04:17

In a poll released Wednesday by Morning Consult/Politico, Trump's approval rating was revealed to be at 44 percent following the House's vote to adopt the Republican-sponsored American Health Care Act (AHCA), as reported by The Hill.

The forthcoming CBO's new report will factor in a major change made to the bill before the House voted on it. Republicans have a 52-48 advantage there, which means they can't lose more than two votes if they want the bill to pass. Only 6% of Democrats and 18% of independents have a favorable opinion of the plan.

The original version of the bill was pulled from the House before a vote in March due to lackluster support from Republicans.

"Trumpcare will embezzle health care from 24 million hard-working Americans, with no replacement plan to expand coverage to any now uninsured individuals", said the Democrat who represents much of Southeast Los Angeles County. Most concerning of all is that the bill is a poorly disguised tax cut for the wealthiest people in the country, which will ultimately result in a $850 billion transfer of wealth from the poorest to the wealthiest Americans over the next 10 years.

A plurality of voters, 41 percent, say they think the GOP bill would make the health care system worse, while 26 percent believe it would improve the system. Just 11% of voters said they thought the bill would bring down healthcare costs, while 42% said it would cause costs to rise.

Almost two-thirds of voters further said they approve of the current law's provisions that ban health insurance companies from raising rates for those with pre-existing conditions, and three-quarters said they think it's a "bad idea" to give states the ability to decide whether to allow health insurers to raise rates for those individuals.

"Obamacare is rapidly collapsing", Ryan said while introducing the bill, according to the House Speaker website. At the time, a Quinnipiac University poll showed only 17% of Americans approved of the plan.

Earlier McConnell was defensive when asked about the 13-member group, insisting that the real work on health care was being done by the entire 52-member Republican caucus. And 20 million Americans still lack health insurance.

"First, GOP leadership and rank-and-file members are united in their desire to repeal as numerous ACA's taxes as possible - particularly the 3.8 percent net investment income tax - as part of healthcare reform and NOT tax reform", the commentary said. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
