Comey fired: Why might Trump have axed Federal Bureau of Investigation chief?

Lawmakers urge Trump to avoid picking a partisan for FBI job Trump Denies Asking Comey for Loyalty, But Says 'I Don't Think It Would Be a Bad Question to Ask'

There have always been reports indicating that President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey because the latter would not sufficiently assure the former of his loyalty. The White House disputed the account, and Mr Trump told NBC the dinner was "very nice".

What also shouldn't be overlooked is how unusual it would be not only for Comey to answer Trump's query about whether he was under investigation, but for the president to ask it in the first place, said David Gomez, a former assistant special agent at the FBI who ran the national security programs in Seattle. "He would say, 'look sir, I really can't get into it, and you don't want me to'".

President Trump was given letters by his Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Mr Sessions' deputy, Rod J Rosenstein, outlining what they saw as failures in Mr Comey's time in office.

"I said, if it's possible would you let me know, am I under investigation?"

In an exclusive interview with NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt earlier Thursday, Trump said he believed Comey requested the dinner.

"The president is not correct", the former official said.

"How and why would Comey go outside the professionalism of Federal Bureau of Investigation standards. when he knows the ground rules as a seasoned veteran of the Department of Justice?" The Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov called on President Trump in the White House, the first such visit since 2013. The HuffPost/YouGov and Politico/Morning Consult polls gave people an option to say that they weren't sure.

White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she doesn't believe it was a conflict of interest for Trump to have asked Comey if he was under investigation.

Donald Trump 'may replace White House communications team with Fox News producers'
A spokesperson for the president told reporters, "We want [the investigation] to come to its conclusion with integrity". The White House has provided no set timeline for the process of replacing Comey.

Comey's people, "who have heard his account of the dinner" and spoke anonymously, insist that Trump asked the director to pledge his personal loyalty to him, but he declined.

Trump asserts in Thursday's interview he would have fired Comey even if top Justice Department officials had not recommended it, calling former President Barack Obama's appointee "a showboat".

"The work of the FBI continues despite any changes in circumstances... there has been no effort to impede our investigation to date", he said. "We'll see what happens", Trump said.

"I want to find out if there was a problem with an election having to do with Russian Federation".

So far, the episode has attracted a wave of fiery criticism from Democrats, who maintained that firing Comey was part of Trump's plan to undercut the FBI investigation and called for an independent prosecutor to take over the investigation.

"If you've seen him under sworn testimony, he just doesn't comment on things he's not supposed to".

At the briefing Friday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer - whose job Trump told Fox News Channel was safe amid reports that it might not be - avoided directly discussing Trump's threat to cancel the custom, saying only that Trump was "dismayed" with the news media.

The Washington Post reported that Rosenstein had threatened to resign after being portrayed as the catalyst for Comey's dismissal.
