Celtics seek top pick, Lakers aim to keep theirs in lottery

Damon Campbell | 16 May, 2017, 09:50

"I've got to bring some positive vibes to it". The lottery, conducted some minutes before, selects only the top three picks beginning at number one.

The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery takes place Tuesday, May 16, and it could not come at a better time. The Lakers fired Black in February when they demoted Buss and fired Kupchak.

A night after the East's top seed hosts Game 7 of its second-round series, the Celtics will have a 25 percent chance of landing the top pick, thanks to a trade that keeps paying off for them almost four years after they made it.

The 2017 NBA Draft is going to be an important one for the Sixers. (The four are then placed back with the others.) There are 1,001 possible combinations and 1,000 of them are assigned to teams, reflecting their odds. At that point, the question will be: Which one of the first three picks does Miami have?

Where are the Lakers now projected to pick?

"All I can remember was when they went to the commercial break and we were in the top three, I was having an anxiety attack", Lloyd recalled. "We also have a plan that we don't". Especially if they end up losing their top-three pick, it'll be all the more valuable to this ongoing rebuild.

None of the Pistons' miscues were worse than in 2003, when they made Darko Milicic the second overall pick in a talent-rich draft. And the Lakers have enough cap space to sign a player to a max contract. He also became just the third player in league history to score 30,000 points with one franchise, joining Malone with the Utah Jazz and Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers on that list.

Tuesday night's NBA Draft Lottery affords the 76ers a rare opportunity.

"Out expectation is that we just hope we stay where we're at instead of moving back a couple spots or something like that", Taylor said. "If we don't, just like those sports moments, we have to find a way". Kentucky's Bam Adebayo and Hamidou Diallo (if he remains in the draft) would be early second-round picks according to DraftExpress. Executives for the Lakers, on the other hand? In that scenario, the 19-year-old shooting guard would join the Sixers in time for next season.

That sounds logical. Why should they give up the pick for a veteran who can't put them over the top against the elite teams in the Western Conference?

The Kings' most glaring need in the draft is at point guard. It's no secret Philadelphia would like to deal him and that Okafor isn't happy there, so it makes sense that he and the team parting ways would be a good idea for everyone involved. "You'll eventually do it", Pelinka said. "If that was the "must" situation, if you had to choose I'm choosing that No. 1 pick". That was Flip Saunders' thing, Taylor said. "That's what we're doing every day".

The Sixers will not only be looking for help from the Lakers, however. It's kind of how we work a little bit.
