'Fast decision' possible on new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Comey was taken aback by Trump request for loyalty pledge 'Fast decision' possible on new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Trump told NBC on Thursday that he was looking for an excuse to fire Comey, who was leading an investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

Schiff on Sunday said Trump "needs to come clean" about whether his claim was "yet another fabrication" or whether he did indeed record his conversations with Comey. So far 14 people - lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials among them - have emerged as candidates.

What exactly would Comey tell us and the Sentate Intelligence Committee?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and parallel congressional investigations have cast a cloud over Trump's presidency since he took office on January 20, threatening to overwhelm his policy priorities.

But it's also where sources close to Comey said Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to him, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation director refused to do, instead promising only "honesty". "Number two, I don't know how that got there, because I didn't ask that question".

Then in six tweets Friday morning Trump raised more questions. The White House disputed that account. That being said, though 90 percent of respondents were aware of Trump's firing of Comey, a total of a third said they didn't know enough about the story to have an opinion, which seems like a lot of people either not paying much attention or still unwilling to form an opinion, despite the wall-to-wall media coverage of the White House crisis.

He told MSNBC on Friday that he had spoken to Mr Comey before the White House meal. "The tweet speaks for itself", the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at his daily news conference.

"The mass of what goes on in any US Attorney's Office.is not political and doesn't become political, no matter who the president is", Bharara said. (Saturday Night Live likely will spoof Spicer in its cold open, around 11:45 p.m. ET this weekend.) Actress Melissa McCarthy is expected to portray him once again after popular past impressions. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press". Trump said Comey wanted to have the dinner because he wanted to stay on in the job.

Some of those close to Trump gamely insisted that the White House had been barely ruffled by the events of the week.

Mr Comey's dismissal has caused an outcry in Washington, with some accusing the president of trying to stifle a probe into alleged Russian links to his election campaign.

Trump anxious about recorded conversations - and recording his own conversations - well before he got into politics, according to former Trump Organization executives.

A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that just 29% of Americans approve of Trump's decision to fire Comey, compared to 38% who disapprove.

"The president is an active president". On Tuesday, the White House's official explanation was that Trump had acted based on the recommendation of deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and attorney general Jeff Sessions. "No idea", said John Dean, Nixon's former White House counsel.

"That would be ideal", the source told NBC.

"I think in many ways our institutions are under assault, both externally, and that's the big news here is the Russian interference in our election system", Clapper said on "State of the Union".
