Ainge's patience pays off with Celtics' draft lottery win

Damon Campbell | 18 May, 2017, 22:51

The Celtics will go from No.1 seed to top pick after their 25 per cent chance of winning came through Tuesday night.

Keeping the second pick in the draft, however, changes everything. The second-year point guard could likely be replaced by either Lonzo Ball or Markelle Fultz, the two highly touted floor generals that headline this year's draft class. NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, left, watches as Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, right, reacts after the learning the Celtics had won the first pick in the NBA basketball draft, at the draft lottery Tuesday, May.

Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, left, Magic Johnson, president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers, center, and Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid, right, react after the learning they will get one of the first three picks as the NBA basketball draft lottery is announced, today, in NY. The former UCLA star and his outspoken father LaVar have made it no secret that they want to be drafted by the Lakers. The Lakers had the third-best odds, but instead moved ahead of the Phoenix Suns, who had the second-best odds, but instead will pick fourth.

It was the first time the Celtics had ever won the lottery.

It's not a bad trade-off, given the Kings were supposed to have the eighth pick, but it is another embarrassing moment for a franchise that can't stop having them.

Law Enforcement Officer Shot In Maybrook Village
While speaking with the suspect, there was an exchange of gunfire, and the officer was hit in the shoulder, Tripodo said. The police chief in the village of Maybrook in Orange County has been shot during a standoff with a suspect.

But there was less than a 4 percent chance of that happening, and as the odds held true to form, New Orleans ended up with the 10th overall selection, and lost its pick to the Kings.

2 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft is a game-changer in many ways for the franchise.

The Lakers, meanwhile, were given the No. 2 spot. "Happy for our organization, happy for our team, happy for our fans". The Heat rounded out the draft lottery with the 14th pick.

"I was very excited and happy", Johnson said on the Lakers' Twitter feed. "I wish we would have gotten the No. 1 pick, but we trust the process and it's going to be exciting to see what we're going for".

Embiid then doubled down: "Hopefully we take that pick". The Kings will select fifth and 10th. Boston acquired the Nets' 2014, 2016 and 2018 first-round picks, as well as the rights to swap in 2017.
