Waze Carpool, Google's actual ridesharing service, expands to California

The fast-growing ride services industry has attracted technology giants and established automakers The fast-growing ride services industry has attracted technology giants and established automakers

Riders who accompany drivers on their routes share their gasoline expense, calculated at no greater than the federal mileage rate of $.54 per mile. Waze said tens of thousands of drivers and passengers have registered for carpooling in northern California. The service expansion also comes after Waze has been running carpooling services in Israel, where it originally debuted the offering back in 2015.

Waze now takes no cut of the transaction but will eventually take a commission "when the quality of the service is high enough to warrant this", Fried said. The company boasts that riders pay no more than the IRS' mileage reimbursement rate of 54 cents per mile, and all of that money now goes to the driver. Because users of the app are only looking for travelers going in the same direction, drivers now don't need a commercial auto license to pick up passengers. While riders can request a vehicle for an immediate pick-up, Waze Carpool will also let them reserve a ride up to seven days in advance. But the company will be amassing data on commuters and their travel habits.

Aside from expanding the range of the service, it seems Waze is also considering putting ads on the ride-sharing feature, Recode reports. "I think when people get themselves into the carpool mindset, they open themselves to the world".

Using technology to match drivers and passengers on days they want to participate in a carpool offers more flexibility that may get more people to try it out, and discover they like it, Feigon said.

Waze had launched the carpool service past year in San Francisco and had extended it to nine counties that comprise the Bay Area three months ago. It's now experimenting with another commute-hour option called Shuttle that makes designated stops on routes in two test markets - San Francisco and Chicago.

Currently, Waze Carpool isn't making any money.

Uber and Lyft may have a hold on the carpool market, but Waze is aiming to gain an edge. But how about all the other cars that are more than a year old?
