Merkel, minister stress US ties after critical Trump tweet

At the weekend G7 summit of wealthy nations, European and Canadian officials warned Trump that the United States risked ceding global leadership on combating climate change to China if it withdrew from the Paris accord.

But, while Trump received a warm welcome in Saudi Arabia and Israel, he left behind a bitter taste in Europe after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and the G7 get-together of the world's richest powers in Sicily.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday downplayed suggestions that her bid to further develop relations with India and China was a signal that Berlin and the European Union were moving away from their traditional allies in London and Washington.

German officials have repeatedly insisted that, as a member of the European Union, they can not conduct bilateral trade talks with the U.S. and that they are not ready to dramatically increase military spending. But the Merkel-Trump meetings in Brussels and Sicily were apparently too much even for the stoical chancellor. But she also highlighted Germany's history of cooperating with India and China in a global world. On Monday, Merkel had underlined her doubts about the reliability of the United States as an ally.

"But we must not forget: Trump is not the United States", Schultz said.

Paul Diggle, senior economist at Aberdeen Asset Management, said the weak job reading was unexpected but "isn't a disaster". The Fed is expected to increase rates again in June, which would only be the fourth rate hike since the Great Recession.

On Merkel's apparent criticism of President Trump, Haley said: "I think there's obviously some differences of opinion between the two of them, but at the same time I know that we believe in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and how strongly we believe about those allies and we're going to continue to do that".

Trump's announcement "won't stop all those of us who feel obliged to protect the planet", according to Merkel.

Not only does the spat continue but Merkel has seized upon it as an opportunity - in the wake of the election of Emmanuel Macron as a pro-Europe French president - to rally Europe around her leadership. And while German politicians sided with Merkel, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel signalled it was time for cooler heads to prevail.

China has been investing billions in clean energy infrastructure, as its leaders seek to clear up the notorious choking pollution enveloping its biggest cities, including Beijing.

Speaking at a CSU campaign rally, Merkel said: "The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. And I regard that, far from being good for peace, actually as being very unsafe".
