The planned launch of the SpaceXDragon spacecraft for a commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station on Thursday was scrubbed due to poor weather, NASA has said.
NASA's coverage of the launch is set to begin at 5:15PM ET, so check back then to watch the mission live. The return of a triple-launch date, while essentially a coincidence, is a sign that after several years of growing pains, commercial rocket companies are starting to hit the tempos that have promised to boost access to space while reducing the cost. The trunk is detached from Dragon as it reenters the atmosphere and destroyed by the heat of reentry while the main capsule continues to Earth and splashes down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
Instead of Falcon 9, SpaceX will use the Falcon Heavy rocket, which was developed with internal SpaceX funding.
The launch is scheduled for 2:55 p.m. One such experiment is the NICER, an instrument that will eventually be mounted to the outside of the ISS to search for neutron stars.
The next launch attempt is June 3. The Falcon 9 was meant to take the previously used Dragon spaceship to orbit, where it would have docked with the ISS to deliver supplies that are needed to conduct experiments.
Should the Dragon launch June 3, it will arrive at the station on the morning of June 5.
SpaceX designs, manufactures, and launches the world's most advanced rockets and spacecraft. The Dragon capsule is carrying materials for over 250 science and research investigations to be carried out by astronauts over the next year.
As Cygnus departs, Dragon will close in on the station for its capture by Fischer and Whitson Monday, June 5.
