Jaguar Land Rover and San Francisco's Lyft are collaborating on a way to help people get around - a partnership that will extend to future innovations such as robot cars.

The British company behind the two iconic vehicle brands announced Monday that it was investing $25 million into Lyft to help the ride-hailing business expand and develop technologies.

JLR has been testing its autonomous research vehicles on a 44-mile stretch near its Coventry headquarters.

Electric vehicles will be cheaper because they will be used ten times more than cars people use at the moment. Waymo and nuTonomy have also expressed interest and placed investment in Lyft's operations, with nuTonomy working in collaboration with InMotion to develop autonomous cars in Boston through embedding nuTonomy's technologies. While Uber employs teams of engineers to work on developing its own self-driving technology, Lyft is focused on building a dense, diverse network of partnerships instead.

Jaguar Land Rover's investment is the latest in a string from manufacturers in the auto industry as Lyft attempts to compete against Uber's financial might through pooling the resources of several firms.

Self-driving, on-demand taxis will be much cheaper to run as they remove the need to share profits with drivers.

InMotion had earlier invested in SPLT, a Detroit-based digital carpool business.

Lyft already has an array of partnerships and deals related to self-driving cars. The new deal between Lyft and nuTonomy will see them align technology platforms for the autonomous solution - from routing and booking to the performance of system and the way it handles interaction and communication with the passengers.
