Mueller investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, Washington Post reports

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller attends the ceremonial swearing-in of his successor James Comey at the FBI headquarters in 2013 Mueller investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, Washington Post reports
Mae Harvey | 16 June, 2017, 06:24

The scoop is from the Washington Post, who cite five anonymous sources.

Recent reports have said Trump also requested help from Coats and Rogers to pressure Comey to end the investigation into Flynn's activities.

Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel to oversee the FBI's Russian Federation investigation last month, was roundly praised by Democrats and Republicans as the right person for the job.

NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines told NPR's Phil Ewing, "NSA will fully cooperate with the special counsel".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mr Mueller, declined to comment on Mr Ruddy's remarks.

Supporters of Trump condemned the news leaks regarding the new investigation.

The White House has refuted the idea that President Trump is considering dismissing special counsel Robert Mueller, who was recently appointed to oversee the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

That prompted Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Robert Mueller - himself a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director - as special counsel the following week.

Comey testified that initial explanations that he was sacked because of poor leadership were "lies, plain and simple".

Whether Trump had been made aware that he was, in fact, now under investigation by Mueller - and had been under investigation for more than a month - at the time that he reportedly considered firing the special counsel remains unclear.

Trump, we know now, repeatedly asked then-FBI Director James Comey whether he, personally, was under investigation.

At a hearing last week, both Coats and Rogers said they were not pressured by the Trump administration. (That doesn't mean they won't do exactly that, of course.) We are now talking about the President of the United States being investigated for possibly obstructing justice in relation to a criminal probe about a foreign government meddling in our elections for the goal of defeating his Democratic opponent. "That - that's Bob Mueller's job to sort that out".

Despite that, Trump is stewing over the Mueller-led investigation in the same way he did with Comey.

When West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin asked Rosenstein if Mueller could be "terminated without cause", Rosenstein said "yes". He told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that "I don't think the Congress would sit still and allow the president to pick his own investigator".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said via email, "Chris speaks for himself".

"It's a mistake to pretend that this is going to be some neutral investigation", Gingrich said.

The questioning could happen as early as this week.

Trump's legal team quickly denounced the report on Wednesday. Reporter Tony Mauro noted the addition of Dreeben may signal that "Mueller may be seeking advice on complex areas of criminal law, including what constitutes obstruction of justice".

Session will also testify before the House later Tuesday, scheduled to discuss the department budget.

That isn't true anymore, according to reporting by The Washington Post on Wednesday night.
