Scalise remains in critical condition after shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump said Thursday that wounded GOP Congressman Steve Scalise is "in some trouble" but "he's going to be OK, we hope", offering the assessment as a shaken U.S. House gaveled back into session a day after the shooting of Scalise and others at a baseball field.
Scalise remained in critical condition early Thursday morning, according to officials at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the Washington Postreported. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at a Washington hospital, which said he will require several more operations.
Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.
Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.
Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time. We would not be here today if it was not for the thin blue line that the Capitol Police did", he continued.
The shooting left four others injured. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally.
Proceedings were canceled for the day in the House, and instead Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California issued their own calls for unity.

The shooting prompted talk of improving security for lawmakers, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had "no indication" Hodgkinson knew about the ball practice ahead of time.
That means Scalise had likely lost quite a bit of blood, said Dr. John Hunt, the medical director of the Level 1 trauma center at University Medical Center who was interviewed Thursday afternoon.
The ball was taken to the hospital and signed by Matt Mika, a lobbyist and former congressional staffer who was shot during Wednesday's shooting, a friend of Mika's wrote on Twitter. Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip.

Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place.
As of Friday, it's still unclear if any of the gun-control measures frequently proposed in response to mass shootings would have had an impact on Hodgkinson's ability to obtain the guns used in Wednesday's attack, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation said he purchased legally.
