Trump under investigation for obstruction of justice

Saul Franklin | 17 June, 2017, 11:26

His memo criticizing Comey - issued amid the former FBI director's investigation into Russia's 2016 actions - has cast doubt over his objectivity in the eyes of many Democrats.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Marc Kasowitz, Trump's personal lawyer. Though just over half of Americans say they disapprove of Trump's firing of Comey, the number grows to 79 per cent among Democrats.

The widened Russian Federation probe could have far-reaching repercussions for Trump s presidency, transforming his closest aides into witnesses and sucking yet more political oxygen out of the West Wing.

Attorney Steve Ryan says Friday that Michael Cohen plans on cooperating "in all governmental inquiries". The special counsel can only be fired by Rosenstein, though the president could in in theory direct Rosenstein to fire him. Cohen has worked for Trump since the mid-2000s and was active in the campaign.

Ryan is a former general counsel for the Senate's committee on governmental affairs. Rosenstein was acting, because Attorney General Jeff Sessions had recused himself from acting in the Russia investigation after it was revealed he had held two meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak before the November 8, 2016 election.

Trump, we know now, repeatedly asked then-FBI Director James Comey whether he, personally, was under investigation.

Feinstein said an angry Trump has "embarked on an effort to undermine anyone with the ability to bring any misdeeds to light", and the Senate shouldn't let that happen.

Several top intelligence officials have agreed to be interviewed by Mueller s team, according to reports in both The Washington Post and New York Times. Those associates include former national security adviser Michael Flynn, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, foreign policy aide Carter Page and outside adviser Roger Stone. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent Thursday.

They say senior intelligence officials will be interviewed on whether Mr Trump tried to end an inquiry into his sacked national security adviser, and about the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey.

Trump did not directly address the allegations that he is being probed for possibly obstructing justice-a potentially impeachable offense.

Trump's Friday morning tweet is the first explicit statement by Trump confirming that Mueller is investigating allegations that the president's firing of Comey last month was an attempt to obstruct the Russian Federation probe, The New York Times reported.

It was one of a string of messages posted to social media by Trump Friday morning. "I can go around them".

The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after the inauguration. Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal. He said he never met with, or had conversations with, Russians about election interference.

Earlier this week, it was reported that in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey, Robert Mueller, the man appointed to take over the probe as special investigator, had began looking at whether Mr Trump's behaviour represented an obstruction of justice.

While the investigation had originally been focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, the Post reported, the obstruction inquiry began after Trump fired Comey. "We ought to try and reform health care, and reform the tax code, and do an infrastructure bill and focus on jobs and the economy for the American people knowing full well that that investigation is going to be ongoing".
