Summerhays takes advantage of Dufner collapse at Memorial

Damon Campbell | 18 June, 2017, 02:04

"That's the goal. I think this is probably a good stepping stone for (another major)", said Dufner, who became the first OH native to win the Memorial since tournament founder and 18-time major victor Nicklaus himself.

Bubba Watson reacts after missing a putt on the fourth hole during the final round of the Memorial golf tournament, Sunday, June 4, 2017, in Dublin, Ohio. It was the big shot during his second straight day shooting a 70, and he finished 4 under for the tournament to tie for 19th place. Coming off a 78 - and his first round without a birdie in almost four years - Johnson couldn't get anything going and shot 74 to miss the cut by five shots.

"I definitely didn't think I would be three shots ahead with a 68".

Dufner lost the lead in 65 minutes, allowed the field to catch up to him, and finished with a 77.

Fowler had a bogey-free front nine, and was leading the tournament by one stroke heading into the final nine holes. More than his solid round was Dufner's collapse.

Overnight leader Summerhays enjoyed a torrid time, carding two double bogeys on his way to a disappointing round of 77 that saw him finish six shots back of Dufner.

Dufner shot his second consecutive seven-under round of 65 to open up a five-stroke lead heading into Saturday.

"When I feel like I'm comfortable before I hit the putt, I feel like I make a better stroke".

At least he's still in the game, and he has plenty of company.

Jason Dufner believes his dramatic turnaround to win the US PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament is the dose of confidence he needs to bag a second major championship title. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow". He made par, then dropped a shot on the next hole and his chances were over. Rickie Fowler is in third at eight-under.

With his fifth career victory, Dufner moved back inside the top 50 in the world. He kept going. I'm taking a guess, he wasn't drinking water like I was all day. If this tournament demonstrates one thing, it's that winning a professional golf tournament is ridiculously hard. "It will be very special for me to look back and know that I'm part of an event that Mr. Nicklaus put on out here on the PGA Tour".

"Obviously yesterday wasn t my best day", Dufner said.

Hadley made a 1 1/2-putt to win after Hadley missed a 3-foot par try.

He had said his breathing exercises over putting didn't mean he would always have good days, and this was a bad one.

If there is such a thing as a pro's pro, the Cleveland-born Dufner-the only other Ohioan to win the Memorial Tournament besides Jack Nicklaus-is it. "Duf" is well-liked by peers, and smart. He started the final round within striking distance of the lead.

"A train wreck can happen at any moment", Summerhays said in sympathy.

Summerhays has led after 54 holes three times on the PGA Tour.

Jordan Spieth was right in the mix until catching a downhill lie in the bunker left of the par-3 eighth. He tried to play a ideal shot and barely got it out, then chipped down to 5 feet and missed the putt, making double bogey.

Thomas had such a good week with the putter that he was bummed to let two birdie chances get away, not to mention his par on the reachable 15th and a bogey on the 16th that effectively ended his chances. He shot 71 and was six shots behind.

He turned in one of the highest Saturday rounds anyone has ever posted on the PGA Tour and still gone on to win.

The 20-year-old Italian held of defending champion Matthew Fitzpatrick (68) and fellow Englishmen Chris Wood (72).

"I'm 180 some odd tournaments in and still no victory, but I am really pleased", Summerhays said.
