Captain Harry Kane rescues England against Scotland

Damon Campbell | 20 June, 2017, 01:18

The Scots led 2-1 after two magnificent Leigh Griffiths free-kicks in the last three minutes of normal time followed an opening goal from England substitute Alex Oxlade Chamberlain on 70 minutes.

England were seconds away from seeing their 34-game unbeaten run in global qualifiers come to an end and a first defeat at Hampden Park since 1985 after Leigh Griffiths scored two late free-kick goals.

That midfield will look different the next time England take the field in a World Cup qualifier, if only because Dier picked up a yellow card midway through the second half which will see him suspended for the game against Malta in September.

"We knew it was going to be tough away from home, global qualifier, Scotland are doing everything to stay in the World Cup. There was a real quality finish as well, under pressure, to get the point", he said.

"It (the goal) is definitely up at the top, it was a special day", Kane said. They were like a heavyweight boxer and we were middleweight, which we expected.

"You have short-term objectives in winning individual games but in the background a lot of the work we're doing is to start to prepare us for the finals".

Kane had come close on several occasions as Scotland sat in with a 5-4-1 formation, although the hosts improved for a spell after Jake Livermore's deflected effort hit the post just after half-time.

In Glasgow, Kane marked his first match as captain with an equalizer three minutes into injury time in a match between old enemies that burst into life in the dying moments.

Curry, Durant committed to keeping Golden State on top
The Warriors lured him to Golden State last summer with promises of creating an everlasting dynasty, and there's no real reason to believe they won't.

"First and foremost they were definitely great free-kicks, "he said".

The draw means England's cushion at the top of Group F has been narrowed to two points, but there remains confidence within the group that it is a matter of when rather than if they qualify for the World Cup.

"Obviously I was wearing the armband today but I think we've got a lot of leaders in the team".

"We have to keep the ball better, because we were (breaking) in a three-on-one attack".

Gareth Southgate is looking to name a new skipper now that Wayne Rooney's global career is seemingly winding down, and Kane staked his claim by rescuing a point for the Three Lions with a stoppage-time equaliser at Hampden Park on Saturday.

England looked more risky on the rare occasions they got their opponents turning and Kane had another half chance, with Craig Gordon stranded after coming out of box to head away a long ball. But we should never be beaten.

"I thought we came into a hostile atmosphere and controlled the game completely, we should have been further ahead, but if you don't get the second goal, you run the risk of an equaliser at any point".

"We have four games left and four very winnable games and as long as we take the performances from the last two games we will give ourselves a great chance".
