According to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department police, officers are allowed to shoot at animals if they "reasonably believe" they are in imminent danger of being seriously injured or killed.
The dog was shot three or four times, L.A. County animal control confirmed.
Officials responded to a noise disturbance at around 3:40 a.m. after someone complained about a loud party.
A deputy's bullet that was sacked at a charging pit bull apparently ricocheted off the ground and hit and killed a 17-year-old boy who had been helping to restrain the dog, authorities said Thursday.
At that point, a male Hispanic juvenile came out and apparently tried to restrain the dog. As deputies approached the home a pit bull charged at them and bit one of them in the left knee, authorities said. According to the Los Angeles Times, which cited a copy of an internal sheriff's memo it obtained, the 17-year-old boy owned the dog.
Authorities did not immediately say what prompted deputies to fire on the suspect.
"Two deputies engaged the dog in gunfire focused on the dog itself".
Deputies shot and wounded the dog when it was about 10 feet away, then chased it as it tried to run back behind the building, officials said. She said a friend of her nephew came knocking on her door frantically looking for the boy's mother.
The deputy who was bitten was also struck by a bullet fragment.
"He may have been struck by one of the skip rounds in what we're calling an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident", Bergner said.
Robinson, whose daughter lives in the apartment complex near where the shooting happened, told KTLA she never witnessed the dog being aggressive.
We will update this story with more information as it becomes available following the Sheriff's Department's investigation.
