Appeals court overturns conviction of 'Making a Murderer' inmate
A judge said Brendan Dassey shown here in 2006 should be released from prison because his confession was coerced

A three-judge panel from the 7th Circuit on Thursday, June 22, 2017 affirmed that Dassey, a Wisconsin inmate featured in the Netflix series "Making a Murderer" was coerced into confessing and should be released from prison. The Chicago-based 7th Circuit panel upheld a ruling that overturned his conviction past year in the case made famous by Netflix's Making a Murderer.
Ten years after Making a Murderer subject Brendan Dassey was sentenced to life in prison for the sexual assault, murder and mutilation of Teresa Halbach - along with his uncle, Steven Avery - a US appeals court has upheld a decision to overturn his conviction. During a three-hour interview in March 2006, Dassey confessed that he raped Halbach, cut her throat, tied her up and took her to Avery's garage, where Avery shot the young woman in the head. The state Justice Department appealed the ruling to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a move that kept Dassey, now 27, behind bars pending the outcome.
Throughout the interrogation, investigators told Dassey, then a high school sophomore whose IQ had been measured between 74 and 81, that "honesty" is what they wanted to hear and that it's "the only thing that will set free". "As of today's date, Brendan Dassey has lost 4,132 days of his life to prison". Schimel's Justice Department appealed the ruling to the 7th Circuit. Judge Hamilton said that the decision "breaks new ground and poses troubling questions for police and prosecutors".
For people who are still invested in the murder of Teresa Halbach from Netflix's documentary Making a Murderer, we have a major update.

"We are overjoyed for Brendan and his family, and we look forward to working to secure his release from prison as soon as possible". And now it will be up to a Sheboygan County Judge, who's been assigned to the case because the trial judge has retired, to decided whether the motion has any merit. Charred bone fragments found in a burn pit later are determined to be her remains.
February 12, 2007: Avery's trial begins. Avery was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide and unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon.
When considered with "Dassey's age, intellectual deficits, and the absence of a supportive adult", he considered the confession coerced.
He was sentenced to life in prison.
December 2015: Netflix releases the series Making a Murderer, in which the filmmakers cast doubt on the legal process used to convict Dassey and Avery. If they don't do either of those things in the next 90 days, then Dassey could be released from prison. "Because this case is far from being concluded in the appellate courts and we are confident that Dassey's convictions for rape and murder will be upheld, there is no avenue for him to be released at this time".
