Investigators obtain data recorder in USA warship collision

Elyria native who died in destroyer accident was due to retire in three months, according to family Navy: USS Ford will officially join the fleet next month

Gary Rehm Jr., an Elyria native who died when a U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a cargo ship off the coast of Japan, was due to retire in several months, according to a cousin.

The American Red Cross was one of the first groups to respond, meeting the sailors at the pier with comfort kits, said Regional Program Director Amanda Rolsen. An underwater gash flooded two sleeping compartments, killing seven trapped sailors.

Fuel and ammunition are slated to be offloaded from the Fitzgerald in preparation for more extensive repairs, according to the documents, and USA shipyards are lobbying to fix the vessel.

It is not known why the two vessels did not immediately contact the coast guard, Japanese officials say.

The official emphasized that the Navy will wait for all the investigations to be completed before coming to any conclusions about the actions of the crew and decisions over citations for heroism or potential disciplinary action.

The collision occurred very close to the cabin of Cmdr.

So it begins: Britain kicks off Brexit negotiations with EU
In public, European Union negotiators have kept their satisfaction in check, however, and Barnier was at pains to sound conciliatory.

There is speculation that the Fitzgerald might have been temporarily unable to communicate because of damage from the collision, or because its crew was working frantically to keep the ship from sinking.

"There are multiple USA and Japanese investigations underway to determine the facts of the collision", said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson. The crash was officially reported at 2:20am local time, almost an hour after the fact. Cargo ships like the Crystal are required to broadcast AIS location data, which should have been monitored by the Fitzgerald's crew.

The Japan Coast Guard initially announced that the collision happened at 2:20 a.m. after receiving a radio report at 2:25 a.m. from the container ship's crew that the accident had just occurred, the spokesman said.

In order to help determine what happened, investigators will download radar data from the ship's Aegis Weapons System which records routine details on position, course, speed and any nearby ships or aircraft. AIS has been extended further by the addition of satellite monitoring of AIS traffic and the integration of AIS data into navigational beacons and local vessel traffic services (VTS)-think air traffic control for ships.

Fort, the former commander of a squadron of six destroyers, is a graduate of the University of Arkansas and the Naval War College.

The officials said Benson was in his stateroom at the time of the collision.
