Seven die in cable car crash in held Kashmir; 150 rescued

Five people died and a number of tourists are suspected to have been stranded in the cable cars of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, after a tree fell between the two gondola towers and snapped the cable. They accident took place at the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said. It severed the lines and the cable vehicle plummeted to the ground, the official said. The Andraskars, residents of Shalimar Bagh in northwest Delhi, were in Jammu and Kashmir on a family holiday.

The dead were identified as Jayant Anderaskar, his wife Manisha and their daughters Anagha and Jhanvi.

A tree, uprooted by strong winds, fell on the ropeway of the Gulmarg Gondola, an official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

The accident was the first since the cable cars were installed 18 years ago, Hussain said. "Rescue efforts are on to save people trapped in other cars of the gondola cable auto project".
