Between then and December 31 of a year ago, "191 individuals received aid-in-dying drugs under the EOLA, and 111 people died following ingestion of the prescribed drugs", writes the California Department of Public Health. While the report does say that 21 of those people died from other causes than suicide, it was not clear in the survey what had happened with the other 59 patients who had asked for, but not used, the drug. According to the report, only 111 of them took the pills by the end of the reporting period in December.

California's End of Life Option Act gained national attention after Brittany Maynard - a woman who was diagnosed with a stage 4 malignant brain tumor - moved from California to Oregon in order to legally obtain life-ending medication to die under the Oregon Death With Dignity Act.

The law took effect on June 9, 2016.

OR was the first state to adopt this kind of law in 1997. In that timeframe, 191 people received life-ending drugs after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. "We continue to work to ensure that every terminally ill Californian has equal access to all end-of-life care options, including hospice, pain control, palliative care and medical aid in dying". Of those, only 58 percent were actually used by patients and another 11 percent died without ingesting the drugs.

Majority were white, college educated, had health insurance provided by either private or state carriers, and were receiving hospice or palliative care. In late May of this year, the group Compassion & Choice pointed to anecdotal evidence from its Doc2Doc program - which puts California doctors in touch with their counterparts in states where right-to-die laws have been in place for a long time - that suggested at least 504 terminally ill adults in California received prescriptions since last June.

The life-ending drugs must be self-administered without the help of family members, friends or doctors. The report noted that 173 physicians prescribed lethal drugs to 191 patients a year ago.
