Trump and the Pope extend support for baby Charlie Gard's survival

Chris Gard and Connie Yates have lost their legal battle to keep Charlie on life-support and seek treatment for Trump and the Pope extend support for baby Charlie Gard's survival

A world-leading specialist in NY has offered his services to Charlie, while a Vatican-run centre known as the Pope's Hospital promised the terminally-ill tot refuge for as long as he needs it.

It is impossible to meet Rome's request to move 10-month-old terminally ill Charlie Gard to the Bambino Gesù Hospital, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano Wednesday.

Charlie's parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, are now spending their final days at their baby's side.

The hospital's president said it would put Gard on life support and allow his parents to make decisions on his future. The Bambino Gesu' offered to help Yates and her husband Chris Gard after Pope Francis said treatment should be provided "until the end".

The baby's plight has also attracted the attention of US President Donald Trump, who on Monday tweeted that the US "would be delighted" to help.

The Pope offered the support of a Vatican-owned hospital, and the president tweeted that he would do anything to help Charlie. We have now learned that the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital reached out to the British hospital (Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children) and volunteered to take the baby.

Nokia's new smartphones start at £120 in the UK
You can place a pre-order for this model now, but keep in mind you'll have to wait more than one month to get your hands on it. The 5 and 6 will both follow a little later - the Nokia 5 on 2 August costing £180 and the Nokia 6 on 16 August for £220.

Global attention to the case has grown exponentially, involving not only the British authorities but also U.S. President Donald Trump, Pope Francis, an Italian Minister and the Vatican's Bambino Gesù hospital. And that battle officially ended this past week when the highest court in Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, decided in favor of the hospital.

"The domestic courts concluded that it would be lawful for the hospital to withdraw life-sustaining treatment because it was likely that Charlie would suffer significant harm if his present suffering was prolonged without any realistic prospect of improvement, and the experimental therapy would be of no effective benefit", the court said in a news release.

The news comes after a United Kingdom court ruled the infant's life support machine should be turned off. The ruling to end the baby's life support, against the parent's wishes, caused an uproar from around the world. There is now no known cure, but other children born with similar types of conditions are being successfully treated with the nucleoside therapy that Charlie's parents want to try. Social media users have slammed the court's decision not to allow Charlie's parents to take him to the USA for further treatment. However, parental rights are not absolute, and in cases in which doctors and parents disagree, the courts may exercise objective judgment in a child's best interest.

The case has tugged at heart strings in Britain, where more than 1.3 million pounds ($1.68 million) has been raised through GoFundMe to pay for the experimental treatment.

Despite worldwide support for continuing treatment for a gravely ill baby, the hospital where he is on life support is refusing to allow him to be transferred or even taken home by his parents, insisting he die at their hands.
